State Requirements for Nail Technician Licensing in Texas

  • Six hundred (600) hours of training from a Board approved program.
  • Mandatory license renewal every two (2) years.

How Much Do Texas Nail Tech Programs Cost?

Being one of the hottest and fastest-growing states in the US, Texas is a great spot for aspiring nail technicians. To get your license, you’ll need to complete a certified nail tech program which will on average cost you around $5,000 after you cover the cost of fees, tuition, books, and supplies.

Required Skills and Classes

Legally performing nail-related services requires undergoing a 600-hour training program that will include the following courses:

  • 320 hours covering procedures – manicure, pedicure, oil manicure, hand/arm massage, application of polish, buffering, nail extensions, nail repair work, and removal of stains
  • 100 hours covering bacteriology, sanitation, and safety – rules, laws, methods, hazardous chemicals, safety procedures, and ventilation
  • 80 hours covering professional practices – professional behavior, ethics, salon procedures, hygiene, grooming, and public relations
  • 70 hours covering arms and hands – major bone functions, skin structure, growth, regeneration, muscles, nerves, and types of afflictions or diseases
  • 15 hours covering manicurist orientation, laws, and rules
  • 15 hours covering manicurist supplies, tools, and implements

State Licensing Exam

After completing a nail tech program, aspiring technicians must submit an application to take the licensure exams. Once an applicant has met the requirements; an eligibility postcard along with the necessary information to register an account with PSI will be given.

  • Written Exam – first on the list of exams that must be taken first will be theoretical in nature, must be completed within 100 minutes, and is divided into six main categories:
    • Sanitation, disinfection, and safety – 27 questions
    • Client consultation and analysis – 8 questions
    • Manicure and pedicure – 7 questions
    • Nail tips and nail wraps – 7 questions
    • Gel and acrylic nails – 6 questions
    • Regulations and licensing – 5 questions
  • Practical Exam – next on the llst of exams that must be taken will be hands-on in nature, must be completed within 90 minutes, and will require examinees to bring their own supply material along with a model that is at least 16 years of age that will act as a model in which the following procedures will be performed on:
    • Disinfection and set up and disinfection – 10 minutes
    • Manicure service using your model – 25 minutes
    • Nail tip application on one nail of your model’s hand – 10 minutes
    • Nail wrap on one nail of your model’s hand – 15 minutes
    • Acrylic nail application on one nail of your model’s hand – 20 minutes
    • End of exam disinfection – 10 minutes

Option for Specialty License – applicants within Texas have a unique opportunity to apply for a license that combines esthetics and manicuring into an Esthetician-Manicurist Specialty License. The added flexibility allows the license holder to apply make-up and beauty creams and also perform nail technician-related procedures. Acquiring this special license involves the same forms and procedures with some additional requirements such as:

  • Complete an additional 600-750 hours of esthetician courses on top of the original 600 hours of manicurist training
  • Pass both written and practical exams that include both esthetics and manicuring concepts.

Out-of-State License – applicants with an active license from another state may be eligible for a license in Texas via reciprocity provided that the state of origin meets the same 600-hour training program and has passed both theoretical and practical exams. Alternatively, applicants that have not met the minimum amount of training time may use work experience as a substitute. Keep in mind that applicants that have undergone training through apprenticeship will not be applicable in Texas.

For those that do meet the said requirements, application by reciprocity can be processed by submitting a completed form to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
