Required Skills and Classes

State Licensing Exam

Students that are able to complete the required training must register with PSI Services before participating in the state exams. The license will be granted after passing all three exams.

  • National-Interstate Council Written Exam – this is a ninety (90) minute test specifically focused on manicurist service-related subjects indicated as follows:

    • Viruses
    • Fungi
    • Methods of Sanitation, Disinfection, and Sterilization
    • Nail Services
    • OSHA Health and Safety Requirements
    • Human Anatomy and Physiology
    • The Function and Structure of Skin
    • The Function and Structure of Nails
    • Products (including alum, antiseptic, brush cleaners, cuticle cream, exfoliates, gel, moisturizers, monomers, nail polish, etc.)
    • Client Consultation
    • Nail Assessment
    • Service recommendation and documentation
    • Nail Equipment
    • Nail Implements
    • Nail Supplies
    • Pushing back cuticles
    • Removing excess cuticle
    • Applying oil and cream to cuticles
    • Buffing nails

  • North Dakota Manicure Law – this test is focused on assessing the participant’s knowledge of North Dakota Laws and Regulations. This test will be sixty minutes (60) in length and will cost $60.
  • Practical Exam – this test serves 2 purposes. The first is to determine the participant’s ability to perform physical services, the second is to serve as an application for the license with a $50 fee. Once approved; applicants will receive an admission card along with the date, location, and time of the exam. The actual exam will consist of the following manicurist services:
    • Basic Manicure (20 minutes)
    • Sculptured Nail (20 minutes)
    • Nail Tip Application (20 minutes)
    • Nail Wrap (20 minutes)
    • Polish (10 minutes)
  • Reciprocity – applicants that have acquired a license from another state may apply for a new license within North Dakota by providing the following:
    • Reciprocity Application
    • Copy of birth certificate
    • High school diploma
    • Photo ID
    • Proof of the previous license
    • Work experience affidavit
    • Pay a $105.00 reciprocity fee and the original license fee
