State Requirements for Hairstylist Licensing in Alabama

There are several steps one must take prior to earning licensure as a hair stylist in Alabama.

  • Apply for a license with the Alabama Board
  • Schedule and pass the Theory Exam
  • Register for and pass the Practical Exam
  • Alabama Board will notify the candidate with their score and if they pass, a license
  • Renew license every two years

To work in hair design you’ll need a minimum of 3,000 apprentice hours or 1,500 education hours in an accredited facility.

Once registered for either exam, you’ll need to show up to the exam with two valid forms of ID (one with a picture) as well as a Candidate Admission Letter from Prometric, which will be provided once you’ve completed your registration.
