State Requirements for Hairstylist Licensing in New Mexico
New Mexico has its own set of unique requirements for people looking to become a hairdresser. First, applicants must be at least 17 years old and have a high school diploma or an equivalent. Second, they must enroll in and complete a state-certified cosmetology program with a minimum of 1,600 hours. Upon completing the course, applicants will submit their transcripts, apply, and pay the applicable testing fees to take the state cosmetology exams. There are three exams, a national written and practical test, and a state-level jurisprudence exam.
How Much Do New Mexico Hair Schools Cost?
While you might be able to find a vocational school or a community college with lower tuition, you can typically expect to pay around $16,000 (give or take a couple of thousand dollars) for a cosmetology program in New Mexico. Most programs will run between 11 and 16 months for you to complete your required 1,600 hours. You may also incur some additional costs for books and supplies, so be sure to ask about that as you evaluate programs.
Required Skills and Classes
When you pursue your career as a hairstylist in New Mexico, you’ll need to complete a licensed cosmetology course that covers topics that will prepare you for the state’s exams and also prepare you for real-world job conditions. This means you’ll learn theoretical knowledge and practical skills about things like hairstyling, coloring, cutting, scalp treatments, shampooing, and more.
New Mexico doesn’t have a hairstylist-specific certification, so you will also learn some general cosmetology skills like facials, and manicures. Your program will also prepare you for the state’s jurisprudence exams, which covers local regulations for hairstylists and cosmetologists. Some programs, depending on which one you choose, may also delve into topics like business management and marketing. Those can be beneficial if you want to go into business for yourself.
State Licensing Exam
As mentioned in the requirements section above, New Mexico has three required exams before you can earn your license. A score of 75% or better is required on each to pass, and you must pass all three.
The practical exam focuses on getting a client setup, performing proper client protection and sanitation techniques, and performing a number of skills such as thermal curling, chemical waving, haircutting, hair coloring, and using a relaxer.
The written exam is 90 minutes long and includes questions about proper technique and procedure, as well as theoretical knowledge of common cosmetology procedures and human anatomy.
The jurisprudence exam is a multiple-choice test with a two-hour time limit to complete. This test covers the state’s laws and regulations.
How Much Do Hairstylists Make in New Mexico?
According to the most recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2021), the average hourly pay for a hairstylist in New Mexico is $12.63 per hour. That makes for an average annual salary of $26,280.
Does New Mexico Have Continuing Education Requirements for Hairstylists?
Each year hairdressers in New Mexico must renew their licenses, and with each renewal must have proof of completing 12 continuing education hours from an approved program. You can find a list of approved providers on the state board website here. The annual license renewal fee is $100.
Contact Information for Licensing Board
If you have more questions on licensing you can contact the body in charge – the New Mexico State Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists.
