State requirements for licensing in Virginia

  • A choice between six hundred (600) hours of education or two thousand (2,000) hours of apprenticeship.
  • Mandatory license renewal every two (2) years.

Required skills and classes

For those that have dabbled with esthetics before, the school of choice may opt to reduce the required training hours from 600 to 300.

Basic Esthetician Course

This educational program will take a minimum of 255 hours of training in the following areas:

  • Masks
  • Cleansing procedures
  • Facials
    • Done manually
    • Done with electrical fields

An additional 65 hours of makeup plus color theory will be required on the following:

  • Applying false lashes and lash extensions
  • Lash perming

Body treatments topics will also be included which requires 20 hours of training on the following:

  • Body masks
  • Body wraps
  • Body treatments
  • Body scrubs
  • Aromatherapy

Master Esthetician Courses

A master esthetician program will include all of the topics in the basic course with additional ones such as:

  • Lymphatic drainage
  • Microdermabrasion and dermaplaning
  • Chemical exfoliation (including a wide range of peels)

State licensing exam

  • Written Exam – this test is designed to evaluate the examinee’s knowledge of esthetics practices and the rules and regulations of the federal government and Virginia.
  • Practical Exam – this test is designed to evaluate the examinee’s ability to perform esthetics-related services in a way that is sanitary, safe, and legal. This test will also require examinees to bring a kit and mannequin to perform the services on.

  • Facial

  • Manual extraction
  • Tweezing and waxing
  • Disinfection and cleanup

Master Esthetician Exam – more advanced techniques are specific to this course:

  • Ultrasonic and microcurrent (handheld) service
  • Intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment
  • 20% Beta hydroxy acid (BHA) peel service

The average salary for estheticians in this state is about $37,130 a year or roughly $17.85 an hour.

Continuing education requirements
