State requirements for esthetician licensing in Illinois

The IDFPR or Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation have set the following requirements for would-be estheticians in Illinois:

  • At least 16 years of age.
  • Has a high school diploma or its equivalent or is older than the legally allowable age in bypassing high-school.
  • Has completed any approved 750-hour esthetics training program which ranges from 18 weeks and 4 consecutive years.

Required skills and classes

According to the state law of Illinois, aspiring estheticians may acquire a license only through institutions that offer 750 hours’ worth of training.

At a minimum, an approved training program must cover the following topics:

  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Application and removal of products
  • Cleansing, steaming, exfoliation, and extraction procedures
  • Electricity and electrical device use
  • Hair and its follicles and growth cycles
  • Hair removal
  • Integumentary system and skin histology
  • Intrinsic and extrinsic factors affecting the skin
  • Introductory chemistry
  • Mask use
  • Massage
  • Sanitation and infection control
  • Sebaceous and sudoriferous gland disorders
  • Skin analysis and consultation, documentation, and treatment
  • Skin conditions, disorders, and diseases
  • Skincare products
  • Specialized services

State licensing exam

Once a student passes the state training program, they can now take the esthetics licensure exam. The written exam needs to be completed within 90 minutes and is divided into 2 main parts:

  • Scientific concepts: 60%
  • Esthetics practices: 40%

Test takers will need to acquire a score of at least 75% to pass. Else, a remedial training of 125 hours will be required before retaking another exam.

Please note that a $30 fee will be required for the said exam.

Average salary

The average salary is $53,490 per year or $25.72 per hour.

Continuing education requirements

Renewal of license will require 10 continuing education hours.
