State Requirements for Barber Licensing­ in Wyoming

To practice as a barber in Wyoming, a barber must complete four basic steps. The following are the steps you must go through:

Required Skills and Classes

There are two types of barber licenses in Wyoming – Barber and Barber Stylist.

Barber

To become a barber in Wyoming, candidates must first complete 1,000 hours of education at an accredited barber school located in Wyoming. The program must offer both theory and practical learning. Theory learning involves classroom style learning while Practical involves hands-on learning where students practice barbering skills in a barbershop setting. Barber school students are eligible to earn up to 25% of theory related hour credit outside of the premises of the school.

Barber schools are required to provide minimum hours of education for Barbers on the following concepts:

  • Infection Control – 100 hours
  • Shampoo, Rinses, and Scalp Treatment – 100 hours
  • Men’s and Women’s Haircutting – 450 hours
  • Hairstyling – 50 hours
  • Shaving and Beard Trimming – 150 hours
  • Facial Services – 50 hours
  • Barber Shop Management and Business Methods – 50 hours
  • Miscellaneous Studies – 50 hours

Barber Stylist

Barber Stylists must complete the same education requirements as Barbers with the addition of training related to chemical services. This will require 250 additional hours spent in theory and practical settings, totaling 1,250 hours for the program.

In addition to the requirements outlined above in the Barber section, Barber schools are required to provide minimum hours of education for Barbers Stylists on the following concepts:

  • Chemical Re-Arranging Perms and Relaxers – 150 hours
  • Hair Coloring – 100 hours

State Licensing Exams

To become a licensed Barber or Barber Stylist in Wyoming, you will need to pass a Written Theory Exam as well as a Practical exam. The Theory exam will be a multiple choice test that quizzes your knowledge on barbering concepts learned throughout school. The Practical exam will require you to perform basic barbering services in front of a test administrator. You will need to pass both exams before applying for licensure.

Barber stylists will take separate exams from Barbers in which they are tested on all concepts needed for the Barber license in addition to chemical barber services.
