State Requirements for Barber Licensing in Indiana

Becoming a barber in Indiana involves four basic steps:

  • Enroll in a barber school
  • Complete the 1,500 required hours of training
  • Pass the barber exam
  • Renew your license every two years

Required Skills and Classes

Barbers will learn a wide variety of skills through theory classes and practical learning. This will involve demonstrations performed by instructors as well as supervision of performing these skills on mannequins.

Barber school curriculum will cover a wide range of topics related to the basics of barbering, hair care, facial hair and skin care, and barbershop management. These topics include but are not limited to:

State Licensing Exam

The Indiana Cosmetology & Barber licensing agency uses PSI Services to administer the barber exam. There is a $44 fee that must be paid that covers the cost of the barber exam.

The test is comprised of 120 questions; 100 general items, 10 state items, and 10 experimental items. A score of 75% is required to pass and the exam must be completed in 120 minutes.

Does Indiana Have Continuing Education Requirements for Barbers?

There are no continuing education requirements for barbers in Indiana.

Out Of State Barbers: Indiana allows barbers to apply for barber licensure as long as they:

  • Submit an application for Barber by Reciprocity
  • Are at least 18 years old, or are a high school graduate (or equivalent) and are at least 17 years old.
  • Can provide proof of completing a state-accredited barber program with at least 1,500 hours of training
  • Passed the barber exam, with a score of at least 70% on both the practical and written exams
  • Pay the $40 Reciprocity Application Fee

License Renewal: Barber licenses in Indiana are renewed once every two year and can be renewed online or by mail. Renewal notices are sent 90 days prior to the expiration date either by email or mail. There is a $40 renewal fee, or a $50 fee for late renewals.
